چکیده

Worldwide application of pesticides is increasing continually to the extent that they have become an integral part of the ecosystem. Approximately 5.6 billion pounds of active pesticide ingredients are used annually throughout the world (USEPA, 2001). Post market surveillance has revealed that as many as 25 million agricultural workers worldwide experience unintentional pesticide poisoning each year (Alavanja et al., 2004). It has been reported that pesticides available in the market may cause cancer in humans (Alavanja et al., 2004; 2005; Bonner et al., 2005; Beane-Freeman et al., 2006; Hou et al., 2006; Van et al., 2008). Zahm and Ward (1998) showed that childhood cancers such as leukemia, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, soft tissue sarcoma, Ewing s sarcoma, non-Hodgkin s lymphoma and cancers of brain and testes are linked to pesticide exposure. Synthetic pyrethroids are the most widely used pesticides and comprise approximately 25% of worldwide insecticide market (Casida and Quistad, 1998). Human exposure to pyrethroids is well documented (Heudorf and Angerer 2001; Schettgen et al., 2002) ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 2 Number 6 (2013) pp. 30-40 http://www.ijcmas.com

Median lethal dose (LD50) estimation of β-cyfluthrin in male and female Swiss albino mice

Present study was undertaken to determine the median lethal dose (LD50) of β-cyfluthrin (β-cyf), a synthetic (type II) pyrethroid pesticide in male and female Swiss albino mice. The calculation of LD 50 is an initial screening step in the assessment and evaluation of the toxic characteristic of a chemical substance. The selected single doses of β-cyfluthrin based on the pilot study were 200, 22...

Evaluation of the Extracts From Rhizomes of Polygonum bistorta for the Median Lethal Dosages in Swiss Albino Mice

Background: Polygonum bistorta has been used as a remedy for jaundice, smallpox, pimples, measles, cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, expelling worms, insect stings and snakebites. In this study, the crude extract from P. bistorta and two fractions viz. hexane and chloroform obtained from the crude extract were studied for their median lethal dosages (LD50) in Swiss albino mice. Methods: Powdered ...

Post-treatment effects of Alstonia scholaris extract against radiation-induced biochemical alterations in Swiss albino mice

Background: This study has been undertaken to find out the possible radioprotective potential of the Alstonia scholaris extract (ASE). Materials and Methods: For experimental study, healthy Swiss albino male mice were selected from an inbred colony and divided in four groups. Group I (normal) did not receive any treatment. Group II was orally supplemented ASE once daily at the dose of ...

Effect of acute tritiated water (HTO) exposure on Maze learning in adult Swiss albino mice

Background: Brain is the most important organ as it controls and co- ordinates all the activities of our body. Reports on neuroethological investigations in mice particularly associated with learning and memory after radiation exposure are very scanty. Hence, present investigation is an attempt to examine the effects of low dose tritiated water (HTO) acute exposure on adult Swiss albino mice in...

Attenuation of N-nitrosodimethylamine induced hepatotoxicity by Operculina turpethum in Swiss Albino mice

Objective(s): To appraise the antihepatotoxic efficacy of ethanolic extract of Operculum turpethum root on the liver of Swiss albino mice.   Materials and Methods:   Hepatic fibrosis was induced in adult male albino mice through intraperitoneal administrations of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) at the concentration of 10 mg/kg body weight. The liver toxicity and therapeutic effect of the ...

A comparative study of radioprotection by four Indian medicinal herbs against genotoxicity induced by sub-lethal gamma irradiation in Swiss albino mice

Background: Synthetic radio-protective agents like aminothiols are toxic and FDA approved agent amifostine is no exception. Some Ayurvedic herbs have shown radioprotective potential. This study was carried out to test and compare the radioprotective potential of Curcuma longa (CL) Tinospora cordifolia (TC), Zizyphus mauritiana (ZM) and Ocimum sanctum (OS) against 2Gy gamma irradiation ...
